Two participants of the Candidates Tournament 2016 will be defined in Khanty-Mansiysk.
12 world best chess players will play a round robin tournament of 11 rounds. The drawing of colors shall be done in rating order.
FIDE Grand Prix Series consists of 4 chess tournaments. Players that will have 1st and 2nd position in the total standings after all legs of the series will participate in the Candidates Tournament in spring 2016.
In Khanty-Mansiysk Russia will be represented by five grand masters: Sergey Karyakin, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Tomashevsky and Dmitry Yakovenko.
It is worth noting that Evgeny Tomashevsky was the leader of the third stage of FIDE Grand Prix Series that took place in Tbilisi in February 2015. Silver was won by Dmitry Yakovenko from Ugra, Teimour Radjabov from Azerbaijan was on the third place.
Evgeny Tomashevsky got 170 points and won 20 000 euro. Now the player from Russia has all the chances to become the winner of all FIDE Grand Prix Series – after participating in two legs of the series Evgeny is the leader of overall standings and has 252 points.
It is worth reminding that FIDE Grand Prix Series 2014/15 consists of 4 legs, every participant needs to play in 3 of them. Players that will show top two results in the total standings will have the right to participate in the Candidates Tournament. The main competitors of Evgeny Tomashevsky are Fabiano Caruana from Italy and Hiraku Nakamura from USA.
Fabiano Caruana has 230 points while Hiraku Nakamura got 207 points. All three leaders are participating in 3 out of 4 legs of the Series that is why the grand masters that will be playing in the Candidates Tournament in March 2016 will be defined in Khanty-Mansiysk.
Let us recall that FIDE Grand Prix Series 2014/15 has 4 legs. The first one was held in Baku in September 2014, the second one – in Tashkent in November 2014. The third leg took place in Tbilisi. 16 grand masters are participating in FIDE Grand Prix Series. Among them are – the current world champion, President nominees, the semifinalists of Chess World Cup, five grand masters, with top FIDE rating and four host city nominees. Every player participates in 3 legs of the Series. 12 chess players take part in each tournament. The winner of each leg gets 170 points; 10 points are given for the last place in the tournament. The accumulated prize fund of each leg is 120 euro.
