Fabiano Caruana changes chess federation

The Italian grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, who participates in the concluding stage of the FIDE Grand Prix in Khanty-Mansiysk, during the press-conference confirmed his decision to change his chess federation in the near future. Caruana is planning to play for the United States.

As the player holds a dual citizenship, he is able to play for either country. He said that last year in St. Louis he found out that many people wanted him to play for USA, so he decided to change federation in order to play for the US National Team. The tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk may not be the last event he plays under Italian banner, because Caruana’s contract with Italian Chess Federation is not over yet, but next year the player will definitely be considered American.
He added that he represented Italy for 10 years and has improved a lot as a player during that period. Caruana is very grateful to Italy for the support he received not only from Italian Chess Federation, but also from numerous chess enthusiasts in this country.
